Meet Our Hobbycraft Kids’ Craft Panel!

Meet the Hobbycraft Kids’ Craft Panel: our selected winners from the Hobbycraft Mini Makers competition in 2017.

This year, they’ve been reviewing our craftiest kid’s kits to help us understand how we can make them even better! Each member of the panel is a talented creator in their own right, so we’re very happy to be able to showcase their fantastic creations on the Hobbycraft blog, and have asked them a few questions about their favourite crafts.

Look out for the Hobbycraft Mini Makers competition in 2018, where we’ll be on the lookout for more Kids’ Craft Panel members!

Joseph, age 5 from West Yorkshire

What is your favourite type of craft, and why?

I like to cut and stick and make models.  I like to use boxes and tubes to make towers and building for characters I like to play with. I like to paint my models as well.

Tell us about the best thing you’ve ever created:

I made a Soyuz Capsule for my homework at school.  We had to dress up as a famous person and I chose Time Peake.  My project was to write facts about his space journey and make his Rocket.  I

What craft would you like to try in the future?

I would like to try some of the pictures made with pieces of tiles or glass – Mosaics.  They look tricky but very colourful.

Katelan, age 13 from West Sussex

What is your favourite type of craft, and why?

I love all types of creating, especially textiles. I have recently purchased a felting kit form my local Hobby Craft store, at only £4 it was amazing value for money! The kit I picked out of many was a llama kit. As I prefer dogs I used the felt and template to make a dog. I also managed to make a kitten it of the spare felt.

This kit is definately up there with the best – why not try it yourself? Even if you have never tried felting, you will enjoy it as the instructions are so clear, and the end product is so amazing.

I was bought some fat quarters and a sewing machine from Hobbycraft for my birthday.  I used it to design and make a costume for my pet Chihuahua to compete in a local dog show. We came second place! My dog looked so funny and seemed to really enjoy wearing it. My dog, Taro, made me so proud.

What craft would you like to try in the future?

I have seen that Hobbycraft have Winsor and Newton Promarkers, and I would love to try them as they combine both pens and watercolour, both of which are my favourite techniques to draw in.

Another craft I would love to have a go at would be if I could make a DIY fluffy pencil case out of some of the Hobbycraft material. As they have beautiful designs in stock that would make amazing pencil cases for school!

Lily, age 10 from East Sussex

What is your favourite type of craft, and why?

I really love sewing. My Nanny bought me a sewing machine from Hobbycraft and I have made a patchwork cushion and a bag. I also enjoy making cards for people’s birthdays and for Christmas. I made some cool cards using my thumbprint as a face, and a tiny red pompom for a nose. Then I drew on some eyes and some antlers to make a reindeer.

Tell us about the best thing you’ve ever created:

My Nanny has been teaching me to sew different stitches, and I got an embroidery hoop and stitched lots of flowers and put some little buttons on it. I covered it in flowers and then I printed Mummy and Daddy’s names on it and sewed on some hearts. I gave it to them when they got married and they love it.

What craft would you like to try in the future?

I have always wanted to do decoupage using lots of different patterns and colours, and maybe covering a box to keep special things in. But really I just love learning lots of new things with crafts.

Martin, age 6 from Dorset

What is your favourite type of craft, and why?

I really enjoy making creations out of cardboard because you can make almost anything with it. Once you’ve finished, you can play with what you’ve made too!

That’s hard! I think it’s an army camp for my army figures that I made out of a shoe box. I used real rocks, camouflage material and drew a helicopter, a fire and an explosion.

What craft would you like to try in the future?

I think making masks and costumes would be fun. I love painting and drawing too. I just like being creative really.

Needle felting because I find it relaxing and therapeutic.

The best thing I have ever created is either my trio of needle felted animals (a rabbit, fox and mouse) that allowed me to win the Hobbycraft Mini Makers competition, or the two ladies I made from needle felting wool.

The craft I would like to try in the future is crochet because there are so many pretty things you can make from just a ball of wool.
