Knitcraft Water Garden CAL Week 1

You have the yarn and now it is time to start crocheting! This week we will be working on the Daffodil, Waterlilly and Oriental Magnolia block. Find all the details below on how many of each hexagon to make and a close up of each block.

You Will Need Instructions

Yarn Colour References:

Yarn A – Green

Yarn B – Yellow

Yarn C – Denim Blue

Yarn D – Light Blue

Yarn E – White

 

For week one we will be making:

  • 1 Daffodil block (1)
  • 6 Water Lily blocks (2)
  • 6 Oriental Magnolia blocks

 

Joining

We have joined our hexagons on the wrong side, slip stitching each block together using light blue yarn. You can use whatever joining method you prefer.

Join the 6 Water Lily blocks around the Daffodil block. The Oriental Magnolia blocks are not joined this week.

Materials

 Knitcraft Cotton Blend in A, B, C, D & E

4mm crochet hook

Scissors

Tapestry needle

Abbreviations 

slst – slip stitch

dc – double crochet

htr – half treble crochet

tr – treble crochet

dtr – double treble crochet

ttr – triple treble crochet

dc3tog – double crochet three together

 

Method

 Using yarn A ch4 and slst to form a loop. (If you prefer you can make a magic circle)

Round 1

ch 2 (counts as 1htr), 11 htr into the loop. Slst in to top of initial ch2, fasten off yarn A

Round 2

Join yarn B/E into any st from previous round.

*ch1, htr, 2tr, dtr, 2tr, htr, into the same st, sl st into the next st, sl st into next st** Repeat from * to **  (6 petals, when you slst into the next st you may need to pull work slightly as the st maybe hidden)

Round 3

We are now going to create some chains, so that we can work the next round of petals.  The chains will sit behind your petals, but if you find it easier work them in front then poke your petals through after.

Continue with yarn B/E, *ch4, sl st into the next sl st from the previous round** repeat from * to ** a further 5 times. (6 ch4 spaces)

Round 4

Continue with yarn B/E *sl st into next ch space ch1, htr, 2tr, 2dtr, 1ttr, 2dtr, 2tr, htr in the same ch space** repeat from * to ** a further 5 times. Slst into the first slst of the round. Fasten of yarn B/E (6 large petals)

Round 5

We are now going to create some chains, so that we can work the next round

Join yarn A into any slst between 2 petals. Working behind the large petals *ch5, slst into next slst from previous round** Repeat from * to** a further 5 times (6 ch5 spaces, you may need to pull apart the two petals slightly to find the sl st)

Round 6

Continue with yarn A, slst into the first ch space, ch4 (counts as a dtr), dtr2tog, ch3, dtr3tog in the same space. *ch3, dtr3tog, ch3, dtr3tog in the next ch space**, repeat in each petal from * to ** a further 4 times, ch3, sl st into the top of the first dtr2tog, Fasten off yarn A (6 leaf clusters)

Round 7

Join yarn C to the top of any dtr3tog from previous round, Ch4 (counts as a tr and a ch1), 1tr in same space (corner created) *3tr into each of the next 2 ch3 spaces, 1tr, ch1, 1tr into the top of the next dtr3tog** Repeat from * to ** a further 5 times, slst to top of beg tr.  Fasten off yarn C

(48 tr, 6ch spaces)

Round 8

Join yarn D into any ch1 space, Ch3 (counts as 1tr) 2tr in the same sp *work 1tr in each st until the next ch1 space, work 3tr in ch1 space** Repeat from * to ** a further 5 times, slst to top of third ch of ch3 from beg round.  Fasten off yarn D and sew in loose ends (66tr)

Materials

 Knitcraft Cotton Blend in A, B, C, D & E

4mm crochet hook

Scissors

 slst – slipstitch

dc – double crochet

htr – half treble crochet

tr – treble crochet

spc – starting popcorn

pc – popcorn

tr2tog – treble crochet two together

tr3tog – treble crochet three together

picot – picot

 

Method

 Using yarn B ch4 and slst to form a loop. (If you prefer you can make a magic circle)

Round 1

Ch1 (does not count as a st) 12 dc into the loop. Slst into top of first dc.

Fasten off yarn B. (12 dc)

Round 2

Join yarn E into any st, spc. *ch2, skip next st, pc**

Repeat from * to ** a further 4 times. Ch2 and slst into top of first pc, fasten off yarn E. (6 pc)

 

Round 3

Join yarn A into any ch2 space, ch3 (counts as tr) tr2tog, ch3 tr3tog *ch3, in next ch space tr3tog, ch3, tr3tog**

Repeat from * to ** a further 4 times, ch3 and slst to join. Fasten off yarn A (6 sets of 2 leaves)

Round 4

Join yarn E between any pair of leaves above a pc.

Ch1, 2dc in same space, * in next ch space work 3tr, picot, 3tr, in next space work 2dc*  

Repeat from * to ** a further 5 times, eliminating the last 2dc repeat, slst into the first dc to join.  Fasten of yarn E (6 large petals)

Round 5

Join yarn C to the first tr after any picot. Ch1 *dc , 2htr, 2tr, 2htr 1dc, ch2 (behind picot)**

Repeat from * to ** a further 5 times.  Slst into the first dc of the round. Fasten off yarn C.

 

You may find it easier to ch2 and work in front of your picot, that’s ok as you can always poke it to the front after.

 

Round 6

 Join yarn D to the top of any picot.

Ch3 (counts as tr) work 2 tr into the same st

*1tr into each of the next 8 sts, skp the ch2 behind the picot and work 3tr into picot**

Repeat from * to ** a further 5 times, eliminating the last 3tr into picot.

Slst into the top of initial ch3, fasten off yarn D and weave in any loose ends. (66 tr)
