This pattern is written in UK crochet terms, I have added the US terms in the abbreviations below.
ch = chain stitch
ss = slip stitch
dc = double crochet (US – single crochet)
dec = decrease over next 2 sts. Inset hook into next st, YO pull up loop, insert hook into next st along, YO pull up loop, 3 loops on hook, YO pull through all loops on hook.
Inc = increase, work 2 sts into the same st.
Ear flaps – make 2 cast off the 1st but keep the 2nd one on your hook.
Row 1) ch 4, dc in 2nd ch from hook, dc to end (3)
Row 2) ch1 turn, dc next 2 sts, 2dc inc. (4)
Row 3) ch1 turn, dc next 3 sts, 2dc inc. (5)
Row 4) ch1 turn, dc next 4 sts, 2dc inc. (6)
Row 5) ch1 turn, dc next 5 sts, 2dc inc. (7)
Row 6) ch1 turn, dc next 6 sts, 2dc inc. (8)
Row 7) ch1 turn, dc next 7 sts, 2dc inc. (9)
Row 8) ch1 turn, dc next 8 sts, 2dc inc. (10) cast off 1st flap… remember to leave 2nd flap on hook.
From here on you will be working in continuous rounds to work the body of the hat.
round 1) with the 2nd flap still on your hook, ch1, turn, dc to end of flap, ch 15, dc across the top of the first flap, ch 7, ss to top of 1dc st in the 2nd flap to join. (42)
round 2) ch1, place marker, dc in same st as the ch, dc round (42)
round 3 -5) place marker, dc round (42)
round 6) place marker, dc next 12, dec, repeat to end. (39)
round 7) place marker, dc next 11, dec, repeat to end. (36)
round 8) place marker, dc next 10, dec, repeat to end. (33)
round 9) place marker, dc next 9, dec, repeat to end. (30)
round 10) place marker, dc next 8, dec, repeat to end. (27)
round 11) place marker, dc next 7, dec, repeat to end. (24)
round 12) place marker, dc next 6, dec, repeat to end. (21)
round 13) place marker, dc next 5, dec, repeat to end. (18)
round 14) place marker, dc next 4, dec, repeat to end. (15)
round 15) place marker, dc next 3, dec, repeat to end. (12)
round 16) dec, repeat to end. Cast off leaving enough tail to sew gap at the top closed. (6)
using a smaller hook or darning needle, close the hole at the top of the hat and weave in the ends.
You will notice the front of the hat has a wider opening than the back, attach your yarn to the back to the hat and dc round the whole rim of the hat including around the ear flaps to neaten the edges.
Attach yarn b to right corner of the front opening (you will be working into the 15dc sts across the front of the hat).
Row 1) ch1, dc into next 15 sts (15)
Row 2 – 6) ch1, turn, dc to end of row. Cast off weave in ends. (15)
Fold the front flap up and stitch in place with a similar colour yarn or thread.
Ear plaits and pompoms.
Take your yarn and measure out 6 x arms length of yarn. Using a crochet hook, pull through the 6 lengths of yarn through the middle stitch at the base of the ear flap, pull through so the ends are equal length on both sides. You will now have 12 lengths. Divide the lengths into 3 (4 strands in each group) and plait the yarn to your desired length and securing with a knot. Repeat this on the other side.
Make 2 pompoms and sew them onto the knotted ends of your plaits.
