How to Crochet a Hatching Chick

Spring is just around the corner and this pattern is the perfect spring make designed by @adventuresofacraftymum 

You Will Need Abbreviations

st – stitch

dc – double crochet

dc2tog – double crochet two together (decrease)

trbl  – treble crochet

How To Make

Chick

start by making your slip knot and chain 2, dc6 into the second chain from the hook

this creates your starting circle

Round 1 – (dc2 into the next st) 6 times (12)

Round 2 – (dc1,dc2 into the next st) 6 times (18)

Round 3 – (dc2, dc2 into the next st) 6 times (24)

Round 4-13 – dc (10 rounds)

Round 14 – (dc2, dc2tog) 6 times (18)

Round 15 – (dc1, dc2tog) 6 times (12)

Round 16 – (dc2tog) 6 times (6)

Stuff chick body before sewing up.

 

Wings – Make 2

 

Begin by dc6 into a circle as per the main chick

Round 1 – (dc2 into the next stitch) 6 times (12)

Round 2 – dc

Round 3 – (dc4, dc2tog) twice (10)

Round 4 – (dc3, dc2tog) twice (8)

Round 5 – (dc2, dc2tog) twice (6)

Round 6 (dc1, dc2tog) twice (4)

Once you have completed both wings attach them to your main chick body.

Using your Black and Orange yarn scraps sew on eyes and beak.

Bottom Shell

Round 1 – (dc2 into next st) 6 times (12)

Round 2 – (dc1, dc2 into next st) 6 times (18)

Round 3 – (dc2, dc2 into the next st) 6 times (24)

Round 4 – (dc3, dc2 into the next st) 6 times (30)

Round 5 – (dc4, dc2 into the next st) 6 times (36)

Round 6-8 dc (3 rounds)

Round 9 – *(dc1,half trbl, trbl, half trbl, dc1 all in the same st) skip 1 st, slip stitch into next, skip 1 and repeat * 9 times

Top Shell

 

dc6 into a circle to begin

Round 1 – (dc2 into next st) 6 times (12)

Round 2 – (dc1, dc2 into next st) 6 times (18)

Round 3 – (dc2, dc2 into the next st) 6 times (24)

Round 4-5 – dc

Round 6 – (dc3, dc2 into the next st) 6 times (30)

Round 7 – (dc4, dc2 into the next st) 6 times (36)

Round 8-10 dc (3 rounds)

Round 11 – *(dc1,half trbl, trbl, half trbl, dc1 all in the same st) skip 1 st, slip stitch into next, skip 1 and repeat * 9 times

 

Sew together over 3-4 pints bottom and top egg shells matching up the points so they fit together
