Santa Hat and Beard Knitting Pattern

You Will Need

How to Make

  1. Cast on 48 stitches in white yarn
  2. k2, p2 – Repeat to end of row
  3. p2, k2 – Repeat to end of row
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 till work measures 2.5” (6cm) This will form the ‘rim’ of your hat
  5. Change to red yarn
  6. Knit to end of row
  7. Purl to end of row
  8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 till work measures 5” (12cm)   Now you can start to decrease the hat to give a trademark point
  9. k2, k2tog, knit to last 4 stitches, k2tog, k2
  10. Purl all
  11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 until you have 6 stitches left
  12. Knit 3 rows The three extra rows help a more distinct point, you can leave this out if you prefer.
  13. Cut yarn, leaving enough to pull through remaining stitches and secure
  14. Sew up the hat at the back and decorate with a pom-pom on the top – Voila!

Beard

  1. Cast on 9 Stiches in the white yarn
  2. For the first 10 rows
    • P1, K7, P1
  3. Rows 11-26
    • On odd rows: P1, Knit to last 2 stitches, K1, M1, P1
    • On even rows: P1, Knit to last stitch, P1
  4. Row 27
    • P1, K1 and then put these two stitches on to a stitch holder. Cast off two, Knit to last 2 stitches, K1, M1, P1
  5. Rows 28 – 30
    • On even rows: P1, Knit to last stitch, P1
    • On odd rows: P1, Knit to last 2 stitches, K1, M1, P1
  6. Rows 31-34
    • On odd rows: P1, Knit to stitch before last, cast one off, P1
    • On even rows: P1, Knit to last stitch, P1
  7. Using the two separate stitches:
    • Pick up the two stitches from the holder and, with a new piece of white yarn: P2 for 6 rows.
  8. Row 35
    • Starting with the 2 separate stitches, P1, K1, M2, then continue knitting with the rest of the stitches Knit to stitch before last, cast one off, P1
  9. Rows 36-50
    • On even rows: P1, Knit to last stitch, P1
    • On odd rows: P1, Knit to stitch before last, cast one off, P1
  10. Rows 51 – 59
    • P1, K7, P1
  11. Row 60
    • Cast off
  12. Sew two buttons at the top of each side of the beard – These can be buttoned in to the ‘Rim’ of the hat to attach.
