How to Draw on Canvas with Paint Markers

We set five artists the challenge to come up with some unique and quirky designs in their own style, all they had to work with where three small stretch canvases and a pack of Derwent paint markers, plus a few items from their own craft stash.

In our fourth installment hobby illustrator Jason Cluitt shares his underwater inspired creation.

I’ve always loved to draw ever since studying art at GCSE, I’ve got lots of sketchbooks that I am always doodling in. I predominantly use fine liners but like to try out new mediums and come up with ways in which I can use them in my drawings. For my canvases I was inspired by my continued fascination with the underwater world, I’ve always been intrigued by fish and really enjoy drawing them.

I found the Derwent pens really easy to use, I’ve never used any product like this before and the handy instructions included on the pens made them quick to use straight out of the pack. The paint flowed well when doing both intricate details and colouring in larger areas of my underwater scene, and the pens didn’t take long to dry at all.

You will need

How to Make

1. Lightly sketch your design on the canvases. Make sure it is done as lightly as possible, so you can erase the lines afterwards.

2. Follow the instructions on the pens to activate them. They must be shaken before use, and the ends pushed in a few times to get the paint flowing.

3. Paint your designs onto the canvases, one colour at a time. It is best to start with the lightest colour first, however this is not always possible depending on the design.

4. If you have two different colours next to one another, allow one to dry thoroughly before applying the next one, to prevent the colours running into one another.

5. Once complete, allow the whole work to dry then mount and display them.

I spread my underwater scene design over all three canvases so that they linked into one another, but you could have them in any arrangement that you like . . .

Top Tip!

If one of the pens leaks onto your work,  which can happen if the ends are pressed down too hard, don’t fret! Dab at the blob of paint with a damp tissue or cotton bud to ‘wash’ away the paint, allow the canvas to dry and then you’re ready to start again.
