We set five artists the challenge to come up with some unique and quirky designs in their own style, all they had to work with where three small stretch canvases and a pack of Derwent paint markers, plus a few items from their own craft stash. In our second installment graphic designer Lauren Hoyal shares her Fantastic Mr Fox inspired creation . . .

How to Draw Canvas Illustration

I was inspired to create my fox themed canvases after watching one of my favourite Wes Anderson movies, Fantastic Mr Fox.

Drawing was one of my favourite pastimes whilst at University but I haven’t found the time for it since then so this has been a great way for me to rediscover my passion for it.

Overall I found the pens easy and comfortable to use, and really liked adding details with the white pen onto shaded areas. I would highly recommend these pens for drawing on both canvas and paper.

How to make

1. I started by finding an image of the character I wanted to draw from the film. I had an idea about the kind of style I wanted to create and decided to use three colours, black grey and white.

2. Starting with an outline using the white pen helped me to create the shape of the fox, without worrying about making a mistake as I could draw over the top of the white pen.

Top Tip!

Make sure to shake the pens to get the ink flowing smoothly.

3. I then added in the rest of the detail using the other pens, using the white pen to draw on top of the darker areas to add in more detail.
