As spring is upon us, and it’s that time of year when we all get a little green fingered out in the garden, we decided for our latest craft challenge to set four crafters the task of decorating terracotta pots, whether they be for in or outside the house, there are lots of different ways in which they can be decorated.

We gave all our craft challenge participants two terracotta pots, a selection of craft acrylic, buttons, twine, adhesive gems, ribbon and not forgetting some beautiful papier mache papers, along with a few items from their own craft stash, to see what they could come up with.

In our first installment illustrator Felicity French shows us how she made her bright and colourful pots.

How to Decorate Terracotta Pots

To make the twine wrapped blue pot you will need

How to make

1. Start this make by painting the entire pot blue inside and out. Make sure you lay down plenty of newspaper! Once the pot is dry give it a second coat of paint so it has a nice even finish.

2. Take the double-sided tape and wrap it around the pot where you would like the twine to go. I started underneath the rim of the pot and went down to about 1.5 centimetres from the bottom. Peel the protective cover off the tape so the sticky side is showing. Using the twine start wrapping it tightly around your pot until the double-sided tape is covered.

3.To finish the pot stick the three dimensional gems onto the twine in any pattern you like.

How to Make the Yellow Button Pot

You will need

How to make

1. Take your papier mache paper and measure 3.5 centimetres down from the long edge. Draw a scalloped edge all the way along and then cut out so that you have a long strip. Paste glue onto the back of the paper and slowly place it onto the pot under the rim, wrapping it around carefully until the two edges meet. It doesn’t matter if the paper creases slightly as this is all part of the effect.

2. When the paper has dried, cut a long strip of double-sided tape. Wrap it around the rim of the pot and peel off the protective layer. Start just under the rim and wrap the twine tightly around the pot, working your way up until the entire rim has been covered. You may need to dab a little glue onto the end to keep it in place.

3. When the paper has dried, paint the rest of the pot yellow, inside and out. Give it two coats to get an even finish.

4. Here comes the fiddly bit! Choose which buttons you would like to decorate your twine and cut a tiny piece of double-sided tape and fix it to the back of each button. Stick the buttons on in whichever order you like!

And you are finished, two pretty pots which you can use for all your crafting possessions!
