How To Crochet A Leaf Garland

featured

We ran a competition with the Kingston University Fashion Degree this year to work with a group of first years to teach them to knit and crochet so that they could create their own designs using WI yarn. It was a great experience for everyone and the lucky winner was Amy Goacher who created these amazing Leaf Garland.

  6. Rep steps 4 and 5 a further 5 times.
  7. 3chp, sl st 16, ch11, skip the first chain from the hook, then sl st 10 along chain, sl st 16. Finish off and weave in any loose ends.

Garland

Using a 9mm crochet hook and yarn C, ch170. Finish off and weave in any loose ends.

Attaching the leaves

Attach each leaf using the same yarn you used to make it.

  1. Space the 6 leaves evenly along the garland chain.
  2. Tie the stem of the leaf around the garland.
  3. Cut a length of the yarn, fold it in half creating a loop, then wrap the ends around the garland and thread them through.
  4. Thread one of the ends from step 4 through the top edge of the leaf towards the outside edge and secure it in place with a couple of small stitches. Repeat for the other yarn end.
  5. Repeat this on both sides of the leaf and then the rest of the leaves.
  6. Weave in any loose ends.

Tassels

Make a selection of tassels, some using yarn C and some using yarn D.

  1. Cut 3 equal lengths of yarn – they can be whatever length you desire, but remember they will be folded in half so don’t cut them too short!
  2. Holding the 3 lengths together, fold them in half creating a loop. Wrap the ends of the tassel around the garland then through the loop, pulling it tight to secure the tassel.
  3. Trim to desired length.
