DIY Vintage Wedding Suitcase for Cards

Boho, the new Range of Ginger Ray, has recently landed in Hobbycraft Stores. Inspired by that theme, I created a Mache Suitcase (another great new product) to pair with that.  The Boho range is fun and floral, so I picked colours & elements from the stationery range to add into the case.

Project and images by Duanne Watson.

You Will Need

Craft Essentials

  • A set of brushes (I used Hobbycraft 12pcs Art Nylon brushes)

How to Make

1. Start by coating the entire mache case with a coat of Gesso. This will help seal the case and adds ‘tooth’ for the next coat. Allow to dry for at least 2 hours.

2. Cut out the floral elements from one sheet of Kaisercraft Oh So Lovely -Woman paper.

3. Using the other ‘Woman’ paper place it in the centre on the top of the suitcase so that the floral design is on the top right.

4. Using a flat brush, paint a generous coat of Golden Extra Heavy Gel Matte onto the case to glue down the paper.

5. From the remaining sheet of paper from which you removed the floral elements, cut two ‘planks’, and glue them down either side of the main sheet to make sure the top of the case is covered by paper.

6. Using the same technique, glue down the Wood Effect side of the Kaisercraft Scrapbook Paper (Sandy Toes – Surf) on the front and sides of the paper.

7. Glue down the floral elements you cut out to the bottom left of the top of the case. Allow to dry for at least 4 hours.

8. Now coat the entire case with a coat of Golden Fluid Matte medium and allow to dry for 2 hours.

9. You now need to ‘knock back’ the colour by creating a whitewash.

10. In a small container mix together Two tablespoons of Gesso and 6 tablespoons of water.

11. Using a flat brush, brush over the project following the direction of the planks. Allow to dry for 2 hours.

12. On a small plastic palette, create a copper colour by mixing together 3 parts gold acrylic to 1 part Red Ochre. Brush this over the corners of the case as well as the handle. Allow to dry for 30 minutes.

13. Now create a verdegris effect by using mixing a little Primary Cyan and Hooker’s Green acrylic roughly with a small round brush and create a stippled effect over the copper on the corners and handle.

14. Using the same small brush mix a little of the Primary Cyan and Titanium White together and create a stippled effect on the edges and trim of the corners and handle. Allow to dry for 30 minutes.

15. Using the remaining ‘Whitewash’, using a cloth, rub over the corners and handle again to knock back the colour and give it a milky look. If you feel that the colour is still a little strong, repeat the whitewash effect until you are happy.

16. You can add your name or label to the top using vinyl that has been cut out either by hand or a Cricut Explore Air or by Handpainting it using the Titanium White acrylic.
