Diamond Baby Grow Knitting Pattern

You Will Need

Tension : 23 sts and 30 rows to 10 cm
Size : To fit approx six months

How to Make

Legs : (make two identical)

  • With col A and correct size needle, cast on 50 sts.
  • Work three rows as follows:
    1. Row 1: (rs) p
    2. Row 2: k
    3. Row 3: p
  • Starting with a p (ws) row, work in stocking stitch until leg measures 4cm finishing with a ws row.
  • Increase one stitch at beg and end of next row as follows:
    1. K2, inc 1 (by picking up and knitting into the back of the loop between the next 2 sts)
    2. k until there are 2 sts left on needle, inc 1
    3. k2
    4. P 1 row
  • Repeat these two rows once more.
  • Join both legs together as follows :
    1. K across 54 sts of one leg, inc 1 st at end of first leg
    2. then k across 54 sts of second leg (109 sts)
  • This is now described as the main body.

Main Body

  • Work 7 rows st st (end with p row)
  • Place first pattern row as follows :
    1. K48,
    2. work 13 sts of pattern,
    3. k48
  • Continue to work straight with pattern as set until row 59 of chart is complete.
  • Prepare for armhole, continuing to work pattern from 60th row as set :
    1. Next row: p22, k9, p47, k9, p22
    2. Next row: k21, p11, k45, p11, k21
    3. Next row: p20, k3,cast off 7sts knitwise, k3, p43, k3, cast off 7sts knitwise, k3, p20.

There are now three sections, which should be worked separately, keeping pattern to front as set, and 3sts in reverse st st at both sides of armhole edges throughout.

Left Back

  1. Row 1: p2 tog, p2, k19
  2. Row 2: p18, k3
  3. Row 3: p2tog, p2, k17
  4. Row 4: p17, k3
  5. Row 5: p2tog, p2, k16

Continue on these 19 sts keeping 3sts reverse stocking stitch at armhole edge for eight more rows.

Cast off 7st at centre back edge, and one at same edge on next alternate row.

For back neck and shoulder edges, knit across sts from holder, pick up evenly and knit 8 sts down back neck and across cast off sts, then p a row, knit a row and cast off purlwise on the next row.

Right Back

Rejoin yarn to right back section with ws facing and complete as for first side above. Place remaining 11 sts on a holder.

For back neck and shoulder edge, pick up evenly and knit 8 sts across cast off sts and up back neck and then 11sts from the holder.

P a row, knit a row and cast off purlwise on the next row.

Return to work front as follows :

  • Front : (keep pattern as set on centre 13 sts) :
  • Rejoin yarn with ws facing.
    1. Row 1 : K2 tog, k2, p until there are 4st
      left on needle, k2, k2tog
    2. Row 2 : p3, k to last 3sts, p3
    3. Row 4 : k2tog, k2, p until there are 4st left
      on needle, k2, k2tog
    4. Row 5 : p3, k to last 3sts, p3
    5. Row 6 : k2tog, k2, p until there are 4st left
      on needle, k2, k2tog

There should now be 41 sts on the needle. Keeping 3sts at each armhole edge in reverse st st throughout, work straight to the end of row 73 of chart.

On final row of pattern, cast off centre 13 sts as you go (there will be 14 sts either side of centre front neck)

  • Complete first side of front neck as follows :
    1. Work one row.
    2. Cast off off one stitch at neck edge on next 3 rows, then 2 rows straight. Leave remaining sts on a holder.
    3. Rejoin yarn to other side of neck edge and work one row as set.
    4. Cast off one stitch at neck edge of next 3 rows, then 2 rows straight.

Front Neck and Shoulder Edges

(rs) Work across 11 sts left on needle, pick up evenly and knit 24sts down first side of neck, across centre neck and up other side of neck, k11 sts from holder (46sts) then p a row, knit a row and cast off purlwise on the next row.

Making Up

  1. Sew up the leg seams and centre back seam for 15 cm.
  2. With rs facing pick up and knit 38 sts evenly down first side of back opening and 38sts up second side of back opening. Knit a row, casting off at the same time.
  3. Attach press studs evenly down the opening to fasten.
  4. Join shoulder seams by overlapping reverse stst section of front on top of back and stitching through both layers across only the first 10 sts.
