We are so excited to start our first KAL and even more excited as it’s Christmas themed! We hope you have got your knitting kit ready and have downloaded the first section of the KAL.

Christmas Jumper KAL Part 1

The first week of our Knit-along is here! Part 1 is all about learning the basics and so we are starting with how to cast on and the basic knit and purl stitches.

Cast on

The first thing to learn when making a jumper is how to cast on. It might seem daunting but once you get the first few stitches on your needle you will be away.

Here is a video to show how to cast on…

This is a good way to learn how to cast on because you are knitting the stitches onto the needle. This means you are less likely to make your stitches too tight to start knitting them.

The Knit Stitch

Now you have got all of your stitches on your needle you need to learn the knit stitch. This is the first stitch you need and is used in most knitting patterns so it’s a great one to master!

How to Purl

The second stitch you need to learn is the purl stitch. The Christmas jumper is mainly knitting in stocking stitch which is one row of knit followed by one row of purl. The difference between a knit and a purl stitch is you insert your needle from the front to the back in a knit stitch and you insert your needle from back to front in a purl stitch.

These are all the stitches you need to know to get going with Part 1 of our Christmas jumper KAL. Please share your work in progress photos with #SYKCXmas and join us on ravelry for more tips and to see what everyone else is up to.

Happy Knitting!
